Na plumagem de Verão possui um barrete preto que cobre a cabeça até aos olhos. As asas são cinzentas prateadas e o corpo em geral branco. Distingue-se pelo bico comprido escuro com a ponta amarela e as patas curtas e pretas. Durante o Inverno a testa fica mais clara. O Garajau é um mergulhador excelente, supreendendo com a rapidez com que detecta e se lança na captura de peixes a partir de alguns metros de altura. O melhor período de observação em Portugal situa-se entre o final do Verão e o Inverno, junto à orla costeira nos estuários dos rios e zonas portuárias.
In the summer plumage has a black barret that covers the head till the eyes. The wings are silvery gray and white body in general. It distinguishes by the long dark bill with yellow tip and short black legs. During the winter the forehead becomes more clear. The Sandwich Tern is an excellent diver, suprising by the speed with which detects and spear itself for catching fish from a few meters. The best observation period in Portugal is located between the end of summer and winter, along the coastal estuaries of rivers and harbors.
