Esta ave tem pernas longas e pescoço muito comprido que termina num bico longo e afilado em forma de punhal. A cabeça e pescoço são esbranquiçados com marcas escuras que contrastam com as asas e dorso cinzentos. Em voo recolhe o pescoço em forma de "S" distinguindo-se das cegonhas que voam com o pescoço alongado. Ocorre em habitats de água doce pouca profunda e também costas marítimas. Alimenta-se principalmente de peixes, mas também batráquios, répteis, pequenos mamíferos, insectos e moluscos.
This bird has long legs and a very long neck that ends in a long bill with shape of a dagger. The head and neck are whitish with dark markings that contrast with the gray wings from the back. In flight it collects the neck in form of "S" distinguishing themselves from the storks that fly with their neck streched. It occurs in freshwater habitats and sea coasts. It feeds mainly on fish, but also amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects and mollusks.
