O nome desta ave deve-se ao formato do bico que se assemelha a uma colher. No periodo reprodutivo exibe uma bela plumagem cor-de-rosa e quanto maior a ingestão de crustáceos mais rosada fica, sendo este um bom indicador da qualidade do meio ambiente em que vive. Ocorre em zonas de clima quente e temperadas, junto à costa, nomeadamente rios e estuários.
