Trata-se de uma das mais pequenas toutinegras, caracteriza-se sobretudo pelo distintivo padrão vermelho-escuro das partes inferiores desde o bico até à cauda, bem visível nos machos. Possui ainda pintas brancas debaixo do bico, partes superiores cinzento-azulado e uma auréola vermelha em torno do olho. É uma ave abundante em algumas regiões com excepção de algumas zonas do litoral e nas planícies do Alentejo. Pode ser encontrada ao longo de todo ano, sendo mais fácil de detectar durante a Primavera.
It is one of the smallest Warbler and is characterized mostly by the distinctive dark red pattern of the inferior parts from the beak till the tail, well visible in the males. Has also white spots underneath the beak, the superior parts are gray-bluish, and has a red aureole around the eye. It is abundant in some regions with the exception of some areas of the coast and in the plains of Alentejo. It can be found throughout the year, being easier to detect during the spring.
