Esta gaivota apresenta o dorso cinzento e as asas cinzentas com as pontas pretas e pintas brancas. A cor do bico nos juvenis é escura passando gradualmente a amarela com uma pinta vermelha-alaranjada, quando chegam à idade adulta. As patas são amarelas e apresentam um anel orbital vermelho ou laranja. É uma gaivota comum ao longo do litoral do território português, especialmente em praias, portos e na costa rochosa. Nos estuários encontramos com mais frequência a Gaivota-de-asa-escura.
This gull, presents the back gray and the wings also gray, with the tips black, and with white dots. The color of the beak in juvenils is dark, going gradually to yellow , with a red-orange dot when they reach the adults age. The feet are yellow and has an orbital red or orange ring. It is a common gull along the coast of the portuguese territory, especially on beaches, harbors and rocky coast. In estuaries we find with more frequency the Lesser Black-backed Gull.
