É uma ave pequena e redonda com manchas negras na cabeça e faixa preta em volta da parte superior do peito. Tem o bico cor de laranja com a ponta preta e pernas igualmente laranja. Nos juvenis o bico é escuro e as patas amarelas. É uma espécie essencialmente costeira, preferindo os grandes estuários. Durante a migração pode ser visto em zonas de tundra e em rios secos no interior. Podemos observá-lo em Portugal durante o Inverno, tem no entanto locais onde é residente ou pequeno migrador nomeadamente em Inglaterra.
It is a round and small bird with black spots in the head and black band around the superior part of the chest. The beak is orange with a black tip, and the legs are also orange. In youthful the beak is dark and the legs are yellow. It is essentially a coastal specie, prefering the great estuaries. During the migration it can be seen in zones of tundra or in dry rivers in the interior. It can be observed in Portugal during the winter, has however places where it is resident or small migratory, particularly in England.
