Tem a parte superior do corpo revestido com uma plumagem de um modo geral escura, exceptuando uma mancha branca na nuca. A parte inferior é branca acinzentada desde o peito até ao abdómen terminando com uma cor cinzento azulada no urupígio. Residente em Portugal, é bastante comum em matas de pinhal e carvalhal podendo também habitar em jardins. Alimenta-se principalmente de insectos mas as sementes também fazem parte da sua dieta alimentar.
It has the superior part of the body coated, generally, with dark feathers, except a white spot in the top of the head. The bottom is grey from the chest to the abdomen ending with bluish grey in the back. Resident in Portugal is quite common in forest of pine and oaks but can also live in gardens. Feeds mainly of insects but seeds are also part of their diet.
