Os machos desta espécie apresentam a cabeça e um anel branco no pescoço. O dorso e o ventre são acinzentados e o peito é castanho-escuro. O espelho das asas é azul e o bico amarelo. As fêmeas têm um padrão em tons de castanho e bico castanho. Em Portugal é um pato principalmente residente, nidificando entre Março e Julho, de norte a sul do país. Ocorre praticamente em todo o tipo de habitats aquáticos.

The males of this specie have a green head and a white ring around its neck. The back and belly are grayish and the chest is dark brown. The speculum is blue and the bill is yellow. Females have a pattern in shades of brown and brown bill. In Portugal it is a mainly resident duck, nesting between March and July, from north to south of the country. It occurs in practically all kind of aquatic habitats.
