Mergulhão-de-crista / Great Crested Grebe / Podiceps cristatus



Para além de ser o maior dos mergulhões, é fácil de reconhecer pela plumagem da cabeça que forma uma crista negra dupla. Ligeiramente diferente na Primavera, é fácilmente reconhecível pelas penas laranja arruivadas e pretas que ornamentam os dois lados da cabeça. O corpo é longo, esguio e baixo. Está associado a meios aquáticos relactivamente extensos e com caniçais, por isso é muito frequente em lagos e albufeiras. Alimenta-se de peixes, insectos, moluscos e crustáceos que caça durante os mergulhos.
Besides being the bigger of the divers, it is easy to recognize by the feathers of the head that form a double black crest. Slightly different in the Spring, it easily recognizable by its orange and black feathers that adorn both sides of the head. The body is long, thin and short. It is associated with relatively extensive aquatic environments and with reeds, so it is very common in lakes and dams. It feeds of fish, insects, mollusks and crustaceans that hunting during the dives.
