É uma limícola inconfundível pelo seu tamanho e padrão. Robusto, com um longo bico laranja e patas curtas de cor rosada, o padrão preto e branco torna-o fácilmente identificável. Os olhos são vermelhos e o anel orbital é verelho alaranjado. Ocupa essencialmente habitats costeiros, onde procura alimento nas zonas rochosas e arenosas. Pode ser encontrado também em habitats terrestres e áreas abertas mas quase sempre junto à costa. Alimenta-se maioritáriamente de bivalves, ostras e, nos habitats terrestres, de insectos e minhocas. O bico comprido que possui, permite penetrar nos bivalves e cortar o músculo adutor que une as conchas.
This is an unmistakable wader by its size and pattern. Robust, with a long orange beak and pink short feet, the black and white pattern makes it easily identifiable. The eyes are red and the orbital ring is orange red. It occupies mainly coastal habitats, where it looks for food in rocky and sandy areas. It can also be found in terrestrial habitats and open areas but almost always next to the coast. It feeds mostly of bivalves, oysters and, in terrestrial habitats, insects and earthworms. The long beak that has, allows penetrates the bivalves and cut the adductor muscle that joins the shells.
