É uma limícola de média dimensão, com plumagem de Inverno quase totalmente branca, bico e patas pretas, apresenta uma pequena mancha preta na asa de lado que é visível quando esta está fechada. É frequente vê-lo a correr, a grande velocidade, junto ao limite do mar na areia das praias. É localmente abundante quase exclusivamente nas zonas costeiras. A época de melhor observação é entre Setembro e Março.
