Garça-branca-grande / Great Egret / Ardea alba

The great egret in the image, characterized by its white plumage, dagger-shaped yellow bill, and long black legs, differs from the little egret in size, bill, and especially its legs; while the legs are black in both species, the great egret has bright yellow toes, an unmistakable visual identifier in the field. The great egret feeds in shallow wetlands, where it slowly stalks its prey. It is primarily a wintering bird in our country (seen mainly from October to March).

An important feature of this Great White Egret (Egretta alba) is the fact that it is ringed with the white colour-ring PT41 (also carrying the metal ring Kaunas AP02474). Thanks to the recovery sheet, we now know that this bird travelled all the way 2949 Km, from Lithuania, where it was ringed as a nestling on 25 May 2025, at Lake Alaušas, by Antanas Petraška's ringing team.

It is fascinating to track the origin of these birds, the impressive migratory routes they follow, and their incredible resilience and capacity to overcome challenges. This rare find reminds us of our history with Grey Herons: despite having observed many over the years during our field trips, we have also only encountered a ringed individual once.
