Esta espécie identifica-se sobretudo pelo barrete preto, pelo bico vermelho e pelo ventre escuro, contrastando com as faces esbranquiçadas. Voa geralmente baixo, a poucos metros da superfície da água. É uma ave que pode ser observada sobretudo de Abril a Setembro. Em certos anos a espécie aparece em números consideráveis, enquanto que noutros está totalmente ausente do território português.
This species is identified mainly by the black beret, the red beak and the dark belly, contrasting with the pale face. Usually flies low, just a few meters from the water surface. This bird can be observed mainly from April to September. In certain years, the species appears in considerable numbers, while in others it is totally absent from Portuguese territory.
