É uma ave inconfundível, de tamanho médio e muito colorida. As características mais marcantes são a garganta amarela, o peito e ventre azulados, o dorso vermelho e uma máscara preta. A cauda é comprida, com duas penas centrais que se destacam das restantes. O abelharuco pode ser observado no nosso país no início de Abril até Setembro. Assim como outras aves, o seu nome deriva do facto da sua dieta ser à base de abelhas.
It is an unmistakable bird of medium size and very colorful. The most striking features are the yellow throat, the blue chest and belly, the red back and a black mask. The tail is long, with two central feathers that stand out from the others. The bee-eater can be seen in our country in early April until September. Like other birds, its name derives from the fact that their diet is based on bees.
