Na plumagem de inverno apresenta um pequeno capuz de penas escuras atrás do olho, bico vermelho e grosso e patas vermelhas. Na primavera e verão, a cabeça torna-se preta criando um forte contraste com o bico vermelho. É uma espécie costeira, localmente abundante no litoral sul do território português. Ocorre sobretudo perto da costa e pequenos estuários podendo ser também observada em alguns grandes estuários, embora em menor quantidade. O melhor período de observação decorre entre Outubro e início de Março.
In winter plumage shows a small barret of dark feathers, behind the eye, red thick beak and red feet. In spring and summer, the head becomes black creating a strong contrast with the red beak. It is a coastal species, locally abundant on the southern coast of the portuguese territory. Occurs mainly near the coast and in small estuaries but can also be seen in some large estuaries, although in smaller quantities. The best observation period runs from October to early March.
